a.k.a. 'Ed Vyntage'- in relation to his featured act of performing 'vintage' hit songs from various decades.
Indroducing the latest addition to Fayetteville's entertainment scene: Ed 'Vyntage' Protho, as he is coming to be known, has arrived in Fayetteville to bring a new wave of the future. One that focuses on some of the greatest nostalgic songs. Songs that refuse to be left behind by any current trend of music. Songs that he has themed as 'Vyntage',(spelling changed to give the word an 'orginal' catch-phrase image.)
He isn't just a 'one dimesional' performer either. And, although he performs mostly cover songs of other artist, he has a treasured library of orignal material he is fine-tuning, in preparation for releasing a new CD some time in the immediate future. He isn't worried about being the next 'big star' or anything. He'll just let his 30plus seasoned yrs. of a varied musical background, speak for itself. That's why he's starting his long-distace forseen career with the focus on some of the most memorable music ever recorded. Music and songs we're all familiar with. Songs that remind us of certain moments in our lives that are significant to us, because of their appeal in relation to what ever we may have been going through, or where ever we were just having some of the best times in our lives.
Sure, there are songs that have been done by countless artists, to draw on their 'hit' popularity. But Ed 'Vyntage' is featuring songs that weren't repeated so redundantly, that we began to cringe when we hear them at times. Songs that were played when we would skip the 'obvious' hit on a record (yes, some of these songs were only on vinyl records), to play a song that was over-looked and/or underplayed, that had an appeal all it's own. Like when we hear 'Mind Blowin' Decisions', or 'Ain't No Half-Steppin', by Heatwave, instead of the always played, 'Groove Line', 'Boogie Nights' or 'Always and Forever'. Although any remakes of it would be just as acceptable, there was nothing like hearing the orginal version. Ed does the songs as you remember them in their greatness. He'll cover music from such a wide genre as to go from 'The Way We Were' by Barbra Striesand, to 'Round-A-Bout' by Yes, and many genres in between. And, sure he not only does songs from the past, but any popular song even of the current times( now he has added 'When I'm Gone' by 3 Doors Down, and 'You Rock My World' by Michael Jackson, to his repertoire). To hear him perform, is to be taken on a journey through time, and back. Speaking of 'journey,' (the band, not just the word), he covers the memorable 'Open Arms', 'Who's Cryin' Now', & Don't Stop Believin'. And, even Steve Perry's hit from his solo release after leaving Journey,('Foolish Heart', and 'Oh Sherry'). And when it comes to Stevie Wonder, he challenges anyone to remember some of his more obscure songs, that didn't get as much radio hype as his more classic hits like 'My Cherie Amour', 'You are the Sunshine of my Life', 'Superstitions', or 'Isn't She Lovely'. Songs like 'Golden Lady', 'All I Do', 'As', 'Rocket Love', 'Knocks Me Off My Feet', 'Love's In Need Of Love Today', 'Ribbon In The Sky', 'Love Light In Flight'(from the soundtrack to the film 'The Woman In Red'), and even the long forgotten 'Hey Love'. And, when he plays songs from Stevie's latest CD 'A Time 2 Love', like 'Sweetest Somebody I know', 'From The Bottom of My Heart', 'Shelter In The Rain', or 'So What The Fuss', and you're not familiar with them, he will surely know whether you are a 'true' Stevie Wonder fan.
Ed also loves to do the many various hits from Earth Wind & Fire. From their break-out hit 'Where Have All The Flowers Gone', & 'Keep Your Head To The Sky', to some of their more current radio hits 'Let's Groove Tonite' or 'After The Love is Gone.' Other than his favorite songs from those 2 artists(Stevie W. & E.W.F.), he will cover the spectrum of hits from the 70's, 80's, 90's, and the 2000's, with songs from The Eagles 'Hotel California' & 'I Can't Tell You Why', Chicago's 'Saturday In The Park', 'Colour My World' (and even Peter Cetera's 'Hard Habit To Break'). Hall & Oat's hits like 'One on One' & 'Sara Smile', 'Maneater', and their bouncy groove of 'I Can't Go For That'. Or 'Time After Time' by Cyndi Lauper. Yes, 'those' kind of nostalgic hits. Some of them will even invoke a litlle laughter, with some Men At Work 'Who Can It Be Now', or 'Down Under'. And, oh yea, the serious R&B love songs from the likes of Boyz 2 Men 'End Of The Road' & 'I'll Make Love To You.' And even some hits that may be lurking around in your subconscious by artists you might remember, but don't hear of anymore....'Everlasting Love' by Tony Terry, 'Someone To Hold' by Trey Lorenze(he's the guy singing along with Mariah Carey on her Unplugged version of the Jackson 5's hit 'I'll Be There'). Remember? So, that's how Ed 'Vyntage' picks your memory with his carefully selected choice of 'vintage' songs. His quoted motto is "..Vintage hits never die, they just get better and more meaningful, every time you hear them,....'as time goes by'."
So, if you get the chance, join Edward, er'...Ed 'Vyntage', when and where ever you hear of him doing his act, which by the way, is done with him playing two keyboards, (one he plays his own bass-lines on, and the other is for what ever else you remember hearing in the songs, that made them sound the way they did. What ever sound is identified with the song, he has it in his 2 keyboards. Like the big brass intro heard on the song 'Jump' by Van Halen.) He also is singing in the style very similar if not to the way the original artist performed it. He says he is really accustomed to being surrounded by keyboards, like the keyboardist Larry Dunn of the original Earth Wind & Fire concerts set-up. Or, as Stevie Wonder also performs. But even with the 2 keyboards he is armed with, he can produce any sound that any of the other Workstation-type of keyboards can produce. And sometimes, he get's so into the songs, that he can't help but add his own variation to the energy of them. So, 'catch him while you can.' He'll soon be appearing in regular rotation of performers featured at Charlie's Pub (inside the Prince Charles Hotel, dowtown Fayetteville, on Hay St.). Also, soon he'll be featured at Georgia Brown's Restaurant, and The Mash House. Inquire at those venues about his appearance dates, or just check his web-site on MySpaceMusic.com. Enter his catch-phrase name ( edvyntage ) to visit his profile. Listen to some of the 'vintage' hits he is featuring, with him playing all of the instruments and singing all of the lead and background vocals himself. And check out the latest sensation to hit Fayetteville's entertainment scene. He'll give you a peek into your own life's memories, with his 'vintage'(spelled 'VYNTAGE') song list.
